Extra Credit 03:
Keeping Track Of Raw Numbers
I'm here to tell you, Pilgrim, there is something unexpectedly potent about keeping track of raw numbers. You get raw numbers out of your head and onto paper, and it can be like strapping yourself to a rocket, and firing it off. You get traction. Things move.
What do I mean by "raw numbers?" Anything that can be reduced to a number, which you then enter, preferably, onto a chart that you concoct. Do you occasionally smoke cigarettes? Write down the number of cigarettes you smoke each day (even if it is zero). Are you a drinker? Write down the number of drinks you have each day (again, even if it is zero). Do this for whatever is significant in your life that can be reduced to numbers.
Examples of "raw numbers": Your weight. (This is a big one.) Number of marijuana hits. Number of times having orgasms from sex. Number of times masturbating. The time that you got out of bed in the morning. The time that you got in bed at night. Number of hours that you slept. Number of times getting up to go to the bathroom during the night. Number of hours worked. Number of hours watching television. Number of footsteps you walked during the day. Time spent working out.
Include anything else that can be measured by raw numbers that you think might have some bearing, however remote, on the quality of your life.
Here's how to make this work: figure out the items of which you want to keep track. Then, concoct a chart, with the things of which you want to keep track in the vertical column, and the days at issue in the horizontal column.
But, heck, you don't have to write up a chart. You can just write the numbers on paper in a notebook, or even type them up using some app in your cell phone.
Again, modify this so it works for you.
But do it. Keep track of raw numbers. It's damn near amazing. It really works.
