This coaching is only going to work if you are not impaired by dysfunctional personal habits.

What do I mean by "dysfunctional personal habits?"

Here are some examples:

Overuse of or addiction to tobacco.

Overuse of or addiction to alcohol.

Overuse of or addiction to marijuana.

Overuse of or addiction to psychoactive drugs.

Unhealthy or life-threatening eating habits.

A gambling problem, or a gambling addiction.

Sex addiction.

Pornography addiction.

The foregoing are examples. This is not a complete list. For example, overwork might be a dysfunctional personal habit. Lack of exercise might be a dysfunctional personal habit. Frequently expressing anger or rage in a manner that does harm to others might be a dysfunctional personal habit. Other circumstances and situations might qualify, as well.

The first thing I always do with a new coaching participant, after we establish that such person is genuinely interested in living a better life, and is going to accept coaching and be coachable, is to identify whether or not such person has a dysfunctional personal habit, and to acknowledge and address that habit.

Addressing and taking steps to correct dysfunctional personal habits are some of the most impactful and effective undertakings that a person can do. For example, addressing and correcting a problematic drinking habit can have spectacular results in terms of an individual's quality of life. (Achieving these results can take time, however.)

Now, for better or worse, SkyVillage is not primarily a resource designed to address such issues, so, for now, I am going to leave it at this:

If you are wrestling with a dysfunctional or problematic personal habit, I am sorry to say that, for so long as you are impaired by this habit, you cannot count on receiving the kind of positive life benefits that are available to SkyVillage participants. Now, don't get me wrong: you are welcome to look over the following materials, and if you can make beneficial use of them in your life, then I will be very pleased. But, in terms of living your life to the full, you are going to be impaired for so long as you fail to address and overcome your dysfunctional personal habits. That's just the way it is.

And, by the way, you already know this.

But I do have one useful nugget of coaching in this area. As we often say around here, the first step in achieving effective personal growth is to "get where you are." By this I mean that the first step, and an absolutely essential step, in addressing and overcoming a dysfunctional personal habit is to tell the complete and total truth concerning the habit at issue.

As an example, this kind of declaration makes for a proper, effective start:

"I have a dysfunctional personal habit. I drink too much alcohol. In fact, I am an alcoholic. And being an alcoholic means that I am essentially impaired when it comes to living a rich, full, rewarding life, the kind of life that I dream of living, and that is, a life lived to the full."

Then, after telling the truth in this fashion, the coaching is to go out there and get coaching. So, if you are impaired by one of these habits, then go forth and get help. Starting now.

And, if you are struggling with this kind of problem, then remember:

I love you, and I am rooting for you, sweet Padawan.

And now, you are ready. Well done! You've passed successfully through the Three Portals, and you stand at the doorstep of a new and better life.
