Prime Path 49:

We Are That Your
Way Of Being Is Fixed

The idea that you are responsible for the "way that you are as a being" isn't completely foreign to the way that we talk. You might say "stop being that way." Or, you might say "stop being so lazy." These ways of speaking seem to presume that the person on the receiving end of the communication has the capacity to change the way that he or she is being, which further presumes that anyone can change the way that he or she is being.

But, despite this way of talking, this presumption--that you are responsible for the way that you are, as a being--does not hold in the way that we really are. The way that you are as a being is that you are not responsible for your way of being.

The way that you are as a being is that there isn't anything that you can do about the way that you are as a being.

Or, we might say:

The way that you are as a being is that you are not responsible for the way that you are as a being.

In other words, overwhelmingly, we are that human beings do not intentionally manage or operate, or have the power to change or alter, the way that we are as beings. People are--almost all of the time--that people don't change. You are--almost all of the time--that you can't change.

So, overwhelmingly, the way that we are is that we just are the way that we are. Or, as you (or anyone) might say, "that's just the way that I am."

So, if you tend to overeat, and you are obese, well, that's just the way that you are. Or, if you leave things lying around, and you are a slob, well, that's just the way that you are. Or, you are late all the time. Or, you clown around at work instead of getting anything done. Or, you always find yourself in relationships that don't work. Or, you are frequently sad and depressed. Or, you don't have the courage to quit a job that you dread, or a career that doesn't fit for you. Or, you find yourself drinking too much. Or, you are mean and distant to someone you are dating, even though you like the person. Or, you are angry all the time, and the only people who will hang out with you are other angry people. Or, you tend to screw stuff up, and make messes wherever you go. Or, your life is pretty good, but you are still dissatisfied and unhappy. Or, you don't pay much attention to the way that you groom yourself, or the way that you dress, and you don't look your best. Or, you get tongue-tied around members of the opposite sex, and you can't get laid. Or, you are constantly competitive, and are never content or at peace. Or, you are always scared and timid about opportunities that come your way, and you miss out on a lot of life. Whatever.

It's the way that you are, and "the way that you are" about "the way that you are" is that there's nothing you can do about it.

You can appreciate the irony involved.

See if you can follow this:

If the way that you are about the way that you are is that there is nothing that you can do about the way that you are, then you can't do anything about the fact that the way that you are about the way that you are is that there is nothing you can do about the way that you are, because the fact that you can't do anything about the way that you are is the way that you are.

All of that is actually the way that you are!

In other words, simply, you're stuck.
